How to Use Placeholder Text in Designs and Mockups

Published 20 October 2026Guide for the Lorem Ipsum Generator

Every wireframe, template and mockup starts with a problem: the layout needs text before the real text exists. Placeholder text - the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." - fills that gap, but only if used with intent. Genuinely random filler makes a design look broken; filler sized to the real content makes the layout testable.

This guide covers what placeholder text is for, how to choose its shape (paragraphs, sentences, words), and when realistic content beats Latin.

What placeholder text is actually for

Placeholder text has one job: stand in for real content so layout decisions can be made without it. It shows how much vertical space a block takes, how lines break, whether a card accommodates the expected amount of text, and where the eye lands. It is not a draft of the copy - nobody ships Lorem Ipsum, and a mockup is not finished when its text is real.

The classic text is Latin that has been scrambled from Cicero: grammatical-looking, visually neutral, and universally recognized as placeholder. That recognition is the point - a viewer who sees "Lorem ipsum" instantly knows the text is not the real thing, which prevents a whole category of "is this the final copy?" confusion.

Sizing the filler to the layout

The failure mode of placeholder text is mismatch: a three-line box filled with a ten-line paragraph, or a single-line label filled with a full sentence. Size the generator output to what the real content will actually be:

  • Know the expected length first: how many sentences will the real paragraph be? Generate that many, not a default amount.
  • Match line counts to the design: a card designed for two lines of description needs a two-line filler, so the spacing reads true.
  • Vary lengths across repeated items. Five identical placeholder paragraphs make a list layout look artificial; real content has long and short items, so generate with variation.
  • For headings, use short fragments (3-6 words), not full sentences - a headline-shaped filler in a headline slot.

When realistic filler beats Latin

Classic Lorem Ipsum fails in two situations. First, when the design is being tested for readability, tone or scanning behavior - Latin that no one can read cannot be evaluated for how it feels. Second, when the mockup will be shown to a client or stakeholder who needs to imagine the real content; English (or your language) filler makes that imagination concrete.

For those cases, generate realistic placeholder prose in your own language instead: full sentences on an obviously generic topic (products, services, features), with the same length profile as the real content. The rule is unchanged - it must be clearly recognizable as filler, never mistaken for final copy.

A practical checklist

Before exporting a mockup that still contains placeholder text:

  1. 1Every text slot is filled - empty boxes read as bugs, not as placeholders.
  2. 2Filler length matches the expected real length for each slot.
  3. 3Repeated items vary in length like real content will.
  4. 4Any text that is real (logo names, labels you have already decided) is clearly distinguishable from filler.
  5. 5The handoff notes say which slots still need copy, so the designer does not have to hunt for them.

Frequently asked questions

Where does "Lorem ipsum" come from?

It is scrambled text from Cicero's de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC). It became standard in the 1960s with Letraset dry-transfer sheets, and has been the default since.

How many paragraphs should I generate?

As many as the design has text slots for, sized to the expected real length. The default is a convenience, not a target - match the layout, not the generator.

Can I get the filler in a specific style or topic?

If the generator offers realistic prose, steer it with a topic (features, pricing, testimonials) so the filler reads like the kind of content that will actually live there.
