Data Storage Converter

Free data storage converter between bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB and PB. Switch between binary (1024) and decimal (1000) bases.

MB value
1,024 MB

1 GB = 1,024 MB (binary (1024))

About Data Storage Converter

Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. You can use the binary base (1024, what most operating systems report) or the decimal base (1000, what storage vendors advertise) - so you finally understand why your 1 TB drive "only" shows 931 GB.

How to use it

  1. 1Enter the size you have.
  2. 2Pick the units to convert from and to.
  3. 3Toggle the binary/decimal base if you want to match a vendor or an OS.
  4. 4Copy the converted value.

Examples

Gigabytes to megabytes

Input
8 GB (binary) in MB
Result
8192 MB

Why my drive shows less

Input
1 TB (decimal) in GiB (binary)
Result
≈ 931 GiB

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 1024 and 1000 base?

Vendors sell drives in decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes). Most operating systems report in binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). The toggle lets you compute either way.

Is this for network speed too?

It works for any byte-based quantity, so file sizes, RAM, bandwidth in bytes per second and disk capacity all convert correctly.

Can I convert to bits?

Convert to bytes first, then multiply by 8 for bits - that relationship is fixed.
